What a little planet is
A little planet (or tiny planet) is a stereographic projection of a 360 photo: take the whole sphere, rest it on the ground and project it onto a plane from the zenith. The result is a disc with the ground at the centre, buildings and trees growing outwards and the sky wrapping around the edge. It is the most photogenic way to show, in a single image, everything that surrounded the camera.
How to make a little planet with this tool
- Choose an equirectangular photo (2:1 JPG or PNG) from any 360 camera or panorama app.
- Adjust the rotation to decide what ends up at the top of the planet and the opening to bring the horizon closer or further away. The planet is recalculated instantly.
- Pick the output size and the background (transparent to compose it over something else) and download the PNG.
Tips for a good planet
Photos with a clean nadir (no tripod, no hand) work best, because the centre of the disc is precisely the ground. Scenes with an open horizon and an interesting sky make the nicest planets; squares, courtyards and summits are winning cases. If the original is tilted, fix it first: the projection exaggerates any lean.
No upload, no watermark
The calculation runs pixel by pixel in your browser with the same routine Andarama's media library uses to show its thumbnails. The photo never leaves your computer and the PNG you download is yours, with no watermark and no resolution limit beyond your machine's memory.
Frequently asked questions
What resolution can I download?
Anything between 512 and 4096 pixels per side. Final sharpness depends on the original photo: an 8K equirectangular gives perfectly crisp 4096 px planets.
Does it work for Instagram?
Yes: download at 2048 or 4096 px with a white or black background and upload it as a square image. The transparent background is handy for compositing over another design.
Can I make the planet inside out (sky at the centre)?
Not yet from this tool. That is the “tunnel” projection; if you would like it, write to us and we will add it.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. It is computed in your browser and never travels to any server.
